Application Pool in IIS
An application pool serves as a container for your applications in IIS.
It's a collection of one or more URLs that can be served by a worker
process, and it provides isolation: applications that run on one
application pool are in no way affected by other applications that run
on different application pools. This level of isolation provides the
necessary protection boundary and makes your application secure.
An application pool identity account allows you to run an application under a unique account without having to create and manage domains or local accounts. On IIS 8.0+ the IIS Admin Worker Process (WAS) will create a virtual account with the name of the new application pool and run the application pool’s worker processes under this account by default.
Configuring IIS Application Pool Identities
In the IIS Management Console, under Advanced Settings for your application pool ensure that Identity list item is set to use ApplicationPoolIdentity as shown in the image below.

How to create a new application pool
Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager:
If you are using Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2:
- On the taskbar, click Server Manager, click Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
If you are using Windows 8 or Windows 8.1:
- Hold down the Windows key, press the letter X, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
If you are using Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2:
- On the taskbar, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7:
- On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
In the Connections pane, expand the server name, and then click Application Pools.
In the Actions pane, click Add Application Pool....
In the Add Application Pool dialog box, enter the name of the application pool in the Name: box, in the .NET Framework version: drop-down list select the .NET Framework version your site or application uses, in the Managed pipeline mode: drop-down list select Integrated or Classic, and then click OK.
